A Little History of St. John
The Danish West Indies were colonized and farmed for sugar through the 1600s and 1700s. They became American territories in 1917, when the U.S. bought them from Denmark for $25 million. St. John, the smallest and least developed of the three, still wears that history in the stone ruins of its old sugar estates.
In 1956, land donated largely by Laurance Rockefeller became Virgin Islands National Park, which now protects more than half the island — forests, trails, shoreline, and reefs. This has helped keep the island clean: no sprawling resorts, just green hills tumbling into turquoise bays. People come for the beaches, snorkeling, and the relaxed atmosphere. US citizens do not require a passport.
